Pic-of-the-Week for May 28, 2013

Hola Amigos,

Can you believe that May is already almost over!?  How did that happen?

With the days going by so fast, we are managing to get some more things accomplished.  In this case, we just had to pay for it!  We decided that since Miguel, who repaired our palapas last week, does such good work, we'd have him build us a brand new palapa in our courtyard.  This time of year when the sun is so straight up, it gets very hot in there.  We though a shade structure over the sink and barbecue area would be a good idea, so Miguel was very happy to build it for us. He and Abernardo showed up most mornings at 6:30 or 7AM to start work.  (Good grief!)  I had to get up and get dressed way early!)  They built it like we suggested, he provided a beautiful support post, and it turned out just great.

Here it is "in process", and you can see from the shadows on the wall that in the hot afternoon, we'll have lots of shade here.  It turns out that Miguel's helper, Abern, did most of the labor for the construction.  Miguel took care of wetting down the palm leaves and threading the datil tie on the leaves, and sanding and finishing the post.  Abern did all the measuring and cutting and drilling and hammering and wrapping and tying.  Here is what it looks like this morning, all finished.

Sam's big discovery during all this is that all our palapas are held together with dog chews!!!!  They use cow hide strips to reinforce the structure (hold it together better, and going up the stairs there is one that he can get his nose on!  What torture!!  He's been spending a lot of time on the stairway...waiting and hoping!

Check out our May Picasa album, near the end, to see photos of the work in process.  I got lots of opportunity to use and practice my Spanish, since Miguel speaks no English.  Also, I got to supervise the job, since Ben went with our friend John H on the annual Baja Flying Trip.  I decided to give them a "guy's" trip this time.  They suffered, (I'm sure!), but managed to have fun without me.  Ben did remember to take quite a few photos, and he got some nice ones.  You can find them in a new album, May 2013 Flying TripI uploaded the photos for him, and told him he was responsible for adding captions.  If you are wondering about any of those photos, just send Ben an e-mail and ask him "what?", "who?", "where?", "when?" and "why?"....if you're curious!  It should keep him busy!

Ben & John were back by Sunday, since they again, couldn't get over to the Pacific side due to clouds and fog.  Yesterday, we took him on a land tour of Baja... we drove up to El Triunfo for a nice lunch and tour of that little town, then drove back towards our casa, but off on a mountain road.  Ryan had found a "retirement" home on the internet that a hotel owner had built almost to completion, but the man had died before it was completed.  So, there is this little house sitting up in the mountains.  Ryan had his handy i-phone with the Google map on it to guide us.  Unfortunate, after driving these windy dirt roads for an hour, we ended up here:
Big chain, big lock, and too hot a day to hike the rest of the 5 kilometers or so to the end of the road.  Turns out that at this point, our casa on the beach is about 16.5 miles directly east.  Of course the roads don't go that way!  It was a pretty drive.  Several of the arroyos (The Buenas Aires arroyo starts up here) have Wedego trees; beautiful big things that look a bit like Cottonwood, and there are many Oaks.  That big old tree is a Wedego (see the cow for size comparison).

And this is a close up of an Oak, just because I like this bark.

We managed to find our way home out of the mountains, and enjoyed our first corn on the cob for dinner.  Yum!!!  They weren't real big ears, but they were sweet and delicious, and went nicely with our Aracherra steak

While Miguel and Abernardo were building the palapa, I finished building my quilt!  I think it turned out pretty nice...certainly colorful!  And all constructed from my fabric stash.  I was thinking about quilting this one myself, but I'll be taking it north to be quilted, since my sewing machine is acting up.  It keeps sewing when I take my foot of the foot pedal control, and that's not a good thing!!!  Guess I might be taking my sewing machine north, too.  The baby isn't due until November, so the timing works fine.

Ben is heading back to La Paz this morning, and I'm taking John and Phyllis out to Punta Pescadero where their Cessna is parked.  (This photo is from Loreto).  It's a great ride, and a neat way to see a lot of Baja (just not close up!)

Hasta la proxima semana,

Pic-of-the-Week for May 21, 2013

Hola Amigos,

We had some repairs done on our casa last week ... our palapa roofs needed some TLC, so we hired Miguel from San Bartolo to do it for us.  We'd seen examples of his work at the casa of our friends Sandy and Debi, and thought it looked very good.  He added a few palm leaves to the holes in the palapa downstairs, but did some major repairs on the one upstairs.  The cow hide wraps had been damaged by water leakage and were falling apart, and some of the leaves were in bad shape, too.   You can see were they had removed the leaves in the corner.  Of course, he told us the whole thing needed to be replaced because the Palo de Arco sticks have holes in them, and are too puny and the leaves are in bad shape.  We told him "just fix it" for now, and we'll repair everything AFTER hurricane season.  He told us that the Palo de Arco and palm leaves should be cut when the moon is full, because they're much stronger then.  He told us ours were too "puny" (my translation!)
We really like this contractor...he brought his own ladders and tarps to do the work, showed up when he said he would, and cleaned up as he finished the work!   He also brought us a neat cactus.  Not sure what you call it... "distressed" maybe?  We had one years ago that didn't survive our summer's absence.  Hopefully, this one will take root and make it ok.  The "distressed" part is that lower branch on the left.

I gave him some plants from our garden for his wife; a succulent plant that reproduces like crazy, and some dark red Cannas.   Plants do tend to propagate easily here.  That's how I've gotten most of the plants in in our garden.  We just take cuttings of what we like, and voila!  New plants that are taking over the garden!

Ben had another car show in La Paz this weekend and again took top prize with his '28 Martin Parry.  He says he's starting to get embarrassed about winning so regularly, but everyone appreciates the car and the work he's put into it.  I elected to stay home this weekend...it's getting HOT in La Paz!  I think part of the reason he goes to these is the Quaker State girls...what do you think?

Um-hummm.  Just as I thought!  :-)

In the meantime, I stayed home under a fan, and started a new little quilt project for a Mexican friend who is expecting a baby this fall.  I love getting my creative juices flowing!  (And checking out my fabric stash.  I'm always surprised about how much I have).  No photos yet...maybe it will be done enough next week.

I've also been making Sam some little "tank top" t-shirts for this summer.  We found out a couple years ago that he has contact dermatitis with grass!  Now that is a miserable thing for a low-slung Dachshund, poor guy!  He ends up with no hair on his chest by the end of a summer in Oregon.   So hopefully, he'll be stylin' this summer in his macho shirts, and have hair on his chest in September.

I leave you with a Baja sunset that we enjoyed from our veranda the other day while eating dinner...

More photos are in our May 2013 Picasa Album.

Hasta la proxima semana, when we'll have more stories to tell...

Pic-of-the-Week for May 14, 2013

Hola Amigos,

Happy Birthday to my youngest sister, Shelley!  She is 50-something today, and is spending the summer in Oregon.  We hope to see her and her husband David this summer when we get there.  Here she is when we visited her at her home in Nevada last summer.

It has been a pleasant week here.  I was invited to take a little trip to Santiago with our friends Pat and Patti to pre-pay our water bills at the head office located there, and then have lunch on the patio at one of our favorite little restaurants, Palomar.  We were surprised when we got there with a musician playing the piano and singing, and doing a very nice job of it.  He made his little Yamaha keyboard sing!  (I still haven't figured out how to do all the bells and whistles on mine that he did on his while he played.)  Anyhow, we had a delicious lunch while we were serenaded.

The photo above is looking at our table, and back towards the restaurant and bar.  The musician was just up there on the left side of the terrace.

Ryan had a birthday this week, and had several friends down to celebrate with him.  I imagine he'll be expecting a strawberry pie sometime in the near future, but he and his friends were doing the loop tour for his birthday weekend and not at home.  They did dinner and overnight in San Jose on Friday, a day at the beach at Pescadero (south of Todos Santos) on Saturday and part of Sunday, La Paz on Sunday night (which included a flat tire on Sunday night on the way to La Paz!)  His van is in the shop, so he borrowed our white pickup truck.  He was surprised at the airport when not just one, but 2 of his friends from LA showed up, and his friend Ken from Portland was already here!  It was just a bit tight for the four of them in our 3 passenger cab!!!  Good thing they're all young and skinny!

I spent time Friday and Saturday helping my friend Janet in her new dress shop, SunDays, for her grand opening.  I couldn't believe how many people were still in town!  They really came out of the woodwork for this opening.  By the time I got there to help on Friday an hour after opening, there was a long line of people ready to pay for their purchases, and it went on like that most of the day!  Janet has some really nice clothing and shoes and hats and purses and scarfs and jewelry, and even a few men's shirts.  And sizes to fit everyone who walked in the door.  It's pretty amazing, considering the size of her shop is about a 12 x 12 room, with a changing room curtained off in the hallway.  It was a little calmer on Saturday, but not much!  Obviously, she found a wonderful niche that is needed for this community.  Janet, in the center and Sharon on the left are both wearing clothing from Janet's store.  Pretty, huh?

People are leaving town for the summer, and it's hard to see our new and old friends leave!  There aren't very many Gringos who stay here year round, so the population is always shifting.  This is the time of year when you'll see more fishermen showing up, and the fishing is improving.  And yes, Ben's boat is just about ready to go in the water.  He has fixed all the pumps (yes, please, get those bilge pumps working!), it starts right up and runs well, and now we need to clean it.  The only problem now is when to put it in the water, because our friend with the Cessna is coming down in a little over a week, and Ben will probably go flying with him.  I hate to have the boat moored and just me to take care of it if something happens!  So sorry....no fish tales to tell yet!

Sad to say, my bean crop is finished for the season.  It has some serious bug infestation, so Ben suggested I just get rid of the rest of it for this year.  The corn is coming along nicely, though!  We should have some in a couple weeks.

Yeah, I know....it's a little bitty crop, but there will be plenty for us to eat for a while!

Flowers in the garden are doing well right now.  We have lots of Adenium (Desert Rose) blooming and my big old Nopal cactus is putting out gorgeous yellow blooms, AND we have another banana blooming.  I don't know if any of the developing bananas will be ripe before we leave, but maybe some will be ready when we return in the fall.  It's always fun to watch them develop!  That big reddish pod just keeps peeling back leaves, and new little bananas are underneath.  It's like magic!  We do need to get out there and put some supports on these guys.  The banana bunches get so heavy, the trees just fall over!

I'm looking forward to this summer when I get to play with these two "future Ducks".

More photos are in our May Picasa Album.

Pic-of-the-Week for May 7, 2013

Hola Amigos,

Yes, it's May...my favorite month of the year!  Here in Baja, the temperatures are just about perfect (low 80's during the day, 60's at night), not windy, and the Sea of Cortez is starting to warm up.  Our doors are open most of the day, and windows are open at night.  The fans are on, and life is good!

I have to admit that another reason I like May is because it's my birthday month.  I celebrated another one on last Saturday the 4th, and had a great time!  Ben smoked another big chunk of pork shoulder for pulled pork, and we invited a bunch of friends over.  Ben got more rave reviews for his cooking, and we all enjoyed his day-long efforts of keeping the fire going!!

We even let Ryan in on the celebration, since his birthday is this Friday the 10th.

Our friend Sharon made the cake, and was it yummy!  Mandarin Orange cake with Vanilla Pudding and pineapple frosting.  Very tropical and delicious!  Ryan, the artist in our family, made 3 more bouquets to go on the tables, and to go with the plant Dalia gave me.  He used flowers and foliage from our garden, and came up with some really nice arrangements!

In the meantime, the rest of the week was pretty quiet.  With our open doors that I mentioned before, we usually get a few birds flying into the house and crashing against our windows, knocking themselves silly in the process.  The other day, an Oriole flew through (it's usually hummingbirds, but there aren't too many around right now).  I usually grab the dogs first thing, because they've become bird hunters!  I put them in our bedroom and close the door.  If I can do that fast enough, I have time to grab the bird before it revives to fly around from room to room.  Fortunately, Ben was in the house when it happened last time, and he grabbed it bare handed (I usually use a dish towel).  So, here you have "Bird in Hand, slightly dazed".  He flew away as soon as Ben opened his hand.

Sam and Zoey and I are still doing our beach walks several days a week, and Sam is still wading in to get a drink while Zoey barks at him ("Watch out for the huge waves Sam!  You'll get wet and drown! Watch out!!!")  Since Sam usually gets his tummy wet, and he is so low to the ground, he comes home with a layer of sand on his tummy.  Yesterday, I noticed he left quite a pile of sand on our kitchen floor before Ryan washed the sand off him in our outdoor shower!  This is also the time of year when they enjoy lying on the cool tile floor rather than a rug!  Phew! That Baja sun is hot for little black dogs!

We've been fighting ants here this spring.  We cannot believe the hundreds (thousands?) of ants traveling around the outside of our house (thankfully, only a few inside).  Ben mixed up some pretty potent spray several days ago, and it looks like it's finally doing some good.  We've heard other people complaining of the same problem now, so it must be migration time or something.  They are definitely on the move (at least, until Ben sprays them!)

I've started a new album for May 2013 Picasa photos.

Hasta la proxima semana,
